How to Turn AI Clipart into an SVG for Cricut

Cricut Design Space cuts cleanest from an SVG, because a vector scales to any size without blurring and gives the machine crisp lines to follow. The catch is that only simple, flat clipart with a few colours vectorises well, detailed or painterly art does not.

Here is how to turn clipart into an SVG for Cricut, and how to tell which of your designs will actually cut cleanly.

Why Cricut prefers SVG

An SVG stores shapes as maths, not pixels, so it scales to any size with perfectly sharp edges and gives Cricut clean paths to cut. A PNG can be used for Print then Cut, but for pure vinyl and cut projects an SVG is what you want.

Which clipart converts to a clean SVG

  • Great: bold, flat clipart, simple icons, line art, and designs with only a few solid colours.
  • Not ideal: watercolour, gradients, fine texture, or realistic detail, these trace into messy, jagged shapes.

How to convert clipart to SVG

  1. Start with a clean, flat piece of clipart (four colours or fewer works best).
  2. Run it through an SVG converter, which traces the shapes into crisp vectors.
  3. Download the SVG and import it into Cricut Design Space.
  4. Check the cut lines follow the shapes cleanly before you cut.

If a detailed design will not trace cleanly, you do not have to force it into an SVG. For those, Print then Cut with a transparent PNG at 300 DPI is often the better route.

Clipart Prep Studio has a free SVG converter built in, and it preps the transparent, 300 DPI PNGs you need for Print then Cut too. Your first 5 images are free, no card. For the full detail on vectorising, see the guide on converting clipart to SVG.

Common questions

Can Cricut use PNG or does it need SVG?
Cricut can use a PNG for Print then Cut, but for pure cutting projects an SVG is better because it scales without blurring and gives clean cut paths. Complex art often works better as a Print then Cut PNG.
How do I convert clipart to SVG for Cricut?
Start with flat, few-colour clipart, run it through an SVG converter to trace the shapes into vectors, then import the SVG into Cricut Design Space and check the cut lines.
Why won't my clipart make a clean SVG?
Because it is too detailed or painterly. Watercolour, gradients and fine texture do not vectorise cleanly, so they trace into jagged shapes. SVG suits simple, flat designs with a few solid colours.
What clipart is best for Cricut?
Bold, flat designs, simple icons and line art with a small number of colours. These convert to clean SVGs and cut crisply. Detailed art is better used as a Print then Cut PNG.
Do I need a transparent background for Cricut clipart?
For Print then Cut you want a transparent PNG at 300 DPI so the cut follows the design. For an SVG cut file, the shape itself defines the cut, so a clean vector is what matters.
