PNG to SVG for Vinyl and Silhouette

Vinyl cutters like Silhouette and Cricut cut along paths, and paths come from SVG files, not PNGs. So if you or your buyers want to cut a design in vinyl, it needs to be an SVG.

Here is how to convert clipart to a clean SVG for vinyl, and which designs will actually cut well.

Why vinyl needs SVG

A PNG is a grid of pixels, which a cutting machine cannot follow. An SVG is made of vector paths, which is exactly the outline a blade traces. Converting means turning your pixel artwork into clean cuttable paths.

What cuts well, and what doesn't

Bold, simple designs with flat colours and clear outlines convert to clean SVGs and cut beautifully. Fine detail, gradients and painterly styles do not trace well, so they make messy paths that cut poorly. Pick the right art and the rest is easy.

If a design is soft, gradient-heavy or highly detailed, it is not a good vinyl candidate. Those are better sold as high-resolution transparent PNGs, not cut files.

How to convert

  1. Start with a bold, simple design that will trace cleanly.
  2. Convert the PNG to SVG so the artwork becomes vector paths.
  3. Check the result has clean paths with no stray points or ragged edges.
  4. Test that it opens and cuts correctly in Silhouette Studio or Design Space.
  5. Supply both the SVG and a PNG, since buyers use them for different things.

Common questions

How do I convert a PNG to SVG for vinyl?
Trace the PNG into vector paths and export as an SVG. Start with a bold, simple design, since fine detail and gradients do not trace cleanly, then test it in your cutting software.
Why won't my SVG cut properly?
Usually the source art was too detailed or soft, so it traced into messy paths. Cutting machines need clean, simple paths. Use bold, flat designs for cut files.
Do I need SVG for Cricut and Silhouette?
Yes, for cutting. Both machines cut along the vector paths in an SVG. A PNG can be printed but not cut on its own.
