Which Clipart Can Be Converted to SVG (and Which Can't)

SVG cut files are in demand, but not every image makes a good one. Try to convert the wrong kind of clipart and you get a messy, unusable trace. Knowing which is which saves you from promising cut files you cannot cleanly deliver.

Here is what converts to SVG well, what does not, and how to tell before you list.

SVG is shapes, not pixels

A PNG is a grid of pixels. An SVG is made of clean vector shapes and flat colours. Converting means tracing the image into shapes, which works beautifully for simple, bold artwork and falls apart on anything soft or highly detailed.

What converts well vs badly

Converts cleanlyConverts badly
Bold, simple shapesFine detail and texture
Flat, solid coloursGradients and soft shading
Clear outlinesFuzzy or painterly edges
Limited colour countPhotographic or watercolour art

Watercolour, painterly and highly detailed AI clipart almost never makes a clean SVG. Those are better sold as high-resolution transparent PNGs, which is what buyers of that style actually want.

How to tell before you promise it

  1. Look at your art: is it bold and flat, or soft and detailed?
  2. If it is bold and flat with few colours, it will likely trace cleanly to SVG.
  3. If it is painterly, gradient-heavy or highly detailed, keep it as a PNG.
  4. Only advertise cut files for the art that genuinely converts well.

Common questions

Which clipart can be converted to SVG?
Bold, simple artwork with flat solid colours, clear outlines and a limited colour count converts cleanly. Fine detail, gradients and painterly styles do not.
Why does my clipart make a messy SVG?
Because it has too much detail, texture or soft shading for tracing to handle. SVG is made of clean shapes, so painterly or photographic art traces into a mess. Sell it as a PNG instead.
Can watercolour clipart be an SVG?
Not cleanly. Watercolour and other soft, detailed styles do not trace well. They are better sold as high-resolution transparent PNGs, which is what buyers of that style expect.
