PNG vs SVG vs JPG for Clipart: Which Should You Sell?

For selling clipart, a transparent PNG is the default. SVG is for simple, flat designs that need to scale (Cricut, vinyl), and JPG only suits files where you actually want a solid background, like digital paper. Here is how to choose.

The quick answer

FormatTransparent?Best for
PNGYesClipart, the default. Keeps a transparent background at print resolution.
SVGYes (vector)Simple, flat, few-colour designs for Cricut, vinyl and infinite scaling.
JPGNoOnly when you want a solid background, e.g. digital paper. Smaller files.

Why PNG is the clipart default

Clipart needs to drop onto any design, so it needs a genuinely transparent background, and PNG is the only common format that keeps one. It also holds print resolution without the compression artefacts JPG can add. That is why buyers expect clipart as transparent PNGs.

When SVG is worth adding

SVG scales to any size with perfectly sharp edges, which crafters need for Cricut and vinyl. But only simple, flat designs with a few colours vectorise cleanly, watercolour and detailed art do not, so SVG is a bonus for the right designs, not every pack.

When JPG makes sense

JPG cannot be transparent, so it only suits files where you want a solid background, like digital paper or a flat preview image. Never use JPG for the main clipart, it would bake in a white background.

Clipart Prep Studio outputs transparent PNGs at 300 DPI and has a free PNG to SVG converter built in, so you can offer both where it makes sense. Your first 5 images are free, no card.

Common questions

What file format should clipart be?
A transparent PNG for the main clipart. Add SVG for simple flat designs that need to scale (Cricut, vinyl), and only use JPG when you want a solid background, like digital paper.
PNG or JPG for clipart?
PNG, because it keeps the transparent background clipart needs. JPG cannot be transparent, so it would put a white box behind your art.
Do I need to include an SVG?
Only for simple, flat, few-colour designs that vectorise cleanly and that crafters want for cutting machines. Detailed or painterly clipart does not suit SVG, so it is fine to leave it out.
Why is transparent PNG best for clipart?
Because clipart is meant to sit on top of other designs. A transparent PNG has no background to get in the way, and it holds print resolution cleanly.
