How to Check if a PNG Is Really Transparent Before Selling

A PNG can look transparent in one app and reveal a white box in another. Since your buyer is the one who finds out, it pays to check properly before you list.

Here are quick ways to confirm your clipart is genuinely transparent, so nobody opens your file and hits a white rectangle.

Why fake transparency happens

The classic trap is a white background that just looks like nothing on a white page. It is not transparent, it is white, and the moment your art lands on a coloured card, a dark shirt, or a template, the box appears. JPGs cannot hold transparency at all, so any clipart saved as a JPG has a background whether you can see it or not.

Fast ways to check

  • Drop the PNG onto a bright coloured or dark background and see if a rectangle shows up.
  • Open it in an app that shows the transparency checkerboard, where clear areas appear as a grey and white grid.
  • Place it in a design tool over a photo, which instantly reveals any hidden background.
  • Check the file type, since a JPG can never be transparent no matter what it looks like.

The coloured-background test is the quickest and most reliable. If your art sits cleanly on hot pink with no box, it is genuinely transparent.

If it turns out it is not transparent

If the box shows up, the fix is to remove the background properly and re-export as a PNG. While you are at it, check the edges for a faint white halo, which is the other thing that gives away a rushed cutout on coloured backgrounds.

Common questions

How do I know if my PNG is transparent?
Place it on a bright coloured or dark background. If a white or coloured box appears around the art, it is not transparent. If the art sits cleanly with nothing behind it, it is.
Why does my transparent PNG have a white background?
Either the background was never actually removed, or the file was saved as a JPG, which cannot hold transparency. Remove the background and export as a PNG to fix it.
Can a JPG be transparent?
No. The JPG format does not support transparency at all, so any clipart saved as a JPG will always have a background. Use PNG for transparent clipart.
