How to Make Clipart for POD Fabric and Textiles

Print-on-demand fabric, through services that print your designs onto textiles, is a growing market for clipart and patterns. Fabric has its own demands, especially when your design needs to repeat across metres of material.

Here is how to prep clipart for fabric and textiles so it prints crisp and repeats cleanly.

Two kinds of fabric design

There are two things you might sell for fabric. Individual motifs, which makers place themselves, and repeating patterns, which tile across the whole fabric. Motifs need clean transparency and high resolution. Repeating patterns need to be genuinely seamless, so no visible seam or grid shows when the design tiles.

What fabric printing needs

  • High resolution at print size, so detail holds up on fabric.
  • For motifs, transparent PNGs with clean edges.
  • For patterns, a truly seamless tile with edges that line up perfectly.
  • Even, consistent colour, since fabric shows unevenness clearly.

Seams are the number one fabric problem. If your repeat is not perfectly seamless, the join shows as a line running through metres of printed fabric, which no buyer will accept.

Prepping fabric-ready designs

  1. For motifs, remove the background, upscale to print resolution, and clean the edges.
  2. For patterns, build a genuinely seamless tile where elements continue across every edge.
  3. Test a pattern by tiling it in a grid and checking the joins vanish.
  4. Export at high resolution, and follow your fabric service's size and format guidance.

Common questions

How do I prep clipart for fabric printing?
For individual motifs, make clean transparent PNGs at high resolution. For patterns, build a truly seamless tile so the design repeats across the fabric with no visible seam.
Why does my fabric pattern show a line?
The repeat is not seamless, so the tile edges do not line up and the join prints as a line across the fabric. Make sure elements continue across every edge, then test by tiling.
What resolution does fabric clipart need?
High resolution at print size, 300 DPI, so detail holds up on the material. Check your specific fabric print service's size and format requirements too.
